College Church we begin a new Advent series called “It’s Wonderful Christmas.” Over four sermons we will be looking at the specific approach that each of the four Gospels has towards the Incarnation and the Gospel narrative of Christmas. Historically, the four Gospel authors were known by different emphases that were represented in ancient artistic renditions that were viewed as representative of these emphases. We will be looking at the text of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and then (on Christmas Eve) John. This weekend we are considering a “Down to Earth Christmas.” And we will be looking at Matthew’s genealogy which emphasizes the extraordinary movement of God to earth in the person of Christ, and the remarkable list of human forebears that are representative of the gracious redemption that Christmas describes. Here are four good reasons to come this weekend and hear what Matthew has to say about the Christmas story, its legacy and impact on our lives then and now:

1. If you wonder whether the ancient Christmas story is still credible in today’s world, then Matthew has a message of authenticity and truth that is compelling.
2. If you wonder whether the Christmas message has the power really to impact you or your family, then Matthew has a Christmas message of redemptive mercy that is thrilling.
3. If you want to find a way not simply to survive the holidays, but move through them with joy and vigor into the New Year and beyond, then Matthew has a seasonal message that gives hope that is deeply practical.
4. If you are a student, then Matthew’s list of names – apparently random, easily lampooned – is actually a most radical call to commitment, to write your name in the list of those who are used by God to push forward the gospel of Christ.
