November 11, 2015:

Radical/Crazy/Extreme/Really, Really Radical/Even More Crazy than Ever Before In Christian subculture there has been a spate of books and conferences that have emphasized the "radical" nature of following Jesus. But what does it truly mean to be radical? To be radical is, literally, to get to the root of something. From that original meaning it became connected to "radical" in the sense of crazy/extreme/even more crazy than ever before. If radical basically, literally, means to get to the root of something, then nothing could be more radical than Romans 8 verses 12 to 14. 12 So then, brothers, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh. 13 For if you live according to the flesh you will die, but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. 14 For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of…

How Much Has Changed?

October 28, 2015:

The following article was written for Evangelicals Now and published in their news publication for November 2015. Yet another survey of American religious beliefs has come out recently. This was a telephone survey of 1,000 adults that purports to show that most Americans (no surprise here), including those who do not affiliate with a denomination of one kind or another, believe in a “Creator” ( October 8, 2015). This brings up a host of questions, as well as possible encouragements or otherwise. For instance, how much should we take as ‘gospel truth’ a survey of 1,000 people over the phone? If we want to get serious about what is going on in terms of trends we would do well to read the very brief but authoritative book by Mark Chaves entitled American Religion: Contemporary Trends (Princeton 2011). The trouble with books about trends is that they are quite rapidly out of date,…

God’s Sustaining Grace

October 20, 2015:

God Centered Life Ministries is pleased to welcome Dr. Duane Litfin. He is president emeritus of Wheaton College and is the author of several books, including most recently Paul's Theology of Preaching (IVP Academic, May 2015) and Word vs. Deed (Crossway, 2012). This past summer we celebrated the life of Elisabeth Elliot during a memorial service at Wheaton College, Elisabeth’s alma mater. The service was a moving remembrance of a costly life, and a resounding testimony to the power of God’s sustaining grace. Among those who addressed the gathered crowd was another woman who has also known a costly life. Joni Eareckson Tada held us all in thrall as she spoke of how Elisabeth had befriended and mentored her through some of her own difficult times. Joni’s focus too was the marvelous sustenance of God’s grace. As a part of that memorial service we relived the famous, and quite extraordinary, events of Elisabeth’s life. But…

Why Go to Church?

August 21, 2015:

by Josh Moody This summer Christian Focus released my new book How Church Can Change Your Life. It’s written to answer an overall question that many people today seem to be asking: “Why should I go to church?” To do that, it’s broken down then into “the 10 most common questions about church." In thinking about that question of "Why go to church?" here are some reasons you should consider if you are a Christian: The New Testament nowhere even considers the possibility of a Christian who is not also a part of a local church. If you call yourself a Christian and you are not part of a local church, you fall into a category that is at least questionable, and to be avoided if at all possible. All other things being equal, given that there are churches nearby that you could belong to, not going to one may also…
