Ten Graces of Giving

This weekend Dr. Josh Moody will be preaching on “Money, Profit and Generosity” from 2 Corinthians 9:6-15 in the series “Biblical Answers to Life’s Big Questions.” In preparation for this message, God Centered Life Ministries today is posting “Ten Graces of Giving,” an article written by Pastor Moody for his church that might encourage all of us as we consider biblical giving. Sometimes people think of giving as onerous, burdensome, or unpleasant. Even those who are tasked with the responsibility of asking others for gifts can find it so! But actually, if we learn to think more biblically, giving is a grace. Giving is itself a gift in response to the Gift. Let me explain “10 Graces of Giving” from 2 Corinthians 8 and 9. 1. The Grace of Giving in Poverty (2 Corinthians 8:1-2) Paul wants the Corinthians to know about “the grace of God that has been given among the churches...

The Unshakeable Strength of God’s Word

God Centered Life Ministries is pleased to welcome Steven Lee, pastor of small groups and community outreach at College Church in Wheaton, IL. With our recent focus on reading the whole Bible in a year, Steven shares with us "The Unshakeable Strength of God's Word" which might serve as an encouragement to us as we read and study. The world is rapidly changing. Everything seems up for grabs. Technology is moving at a break-neck speed. Marriage looks vastly different than just a decade ago. Much of our food is birthed in a laboratory. For some of us, things feel precariously unsteady. What’s going to happen next? When’s the next shoe going to drop? Will churches lose their tax status? Will pastors be prevented from speaking freely in the pulpit? Will my business come under fire? Will the cultural intolerance police target me next? When will seemingly thoughtful people stop advocating for the killing of the unborn?...

Advent Guest Post: Remember and Teach

by Ryan Potter  The past few years my wife and I have had the same conversation with our son as we make the rounds to the multitude of grandparents' and great grandparents' homes for Christmas. As we pull into the driveway, we remind him to watch his manners, to make sure to say “please” and “thank you,” and not to be greedy and ask for more presents. Above all, we remind him the reason we celebrate Christmas in the first place is because we've already been given the greatest gift the world has ever seen. There are many reasons that we do this, but none more important than the fact that a human heart, even at three years old, is a factory of idols, and it is easy to turn our affections from the greatest gift of the incarnate Christ to the lesser gifts of Thomas, Bob, Mickey, and the like. And...

Living with Evangelistic Urgency

God Centered Life Ministries is pleased to welcome Steven Lee, pastor of small groups and community outreach at College Church in Wheaton, IL. The man was unassuming. If I hadn’t been told, I would not have known he was a trained military expert for the Indonesian National Armed Forces. He began to tell me of how he came to faith from a Muslim background. Not just any Muslim background, but he was a teacher of Islamic law and practice. Hundreds of students learned from and listened to this man. But God’s ways are mysterious, and at 40 years old he came to know the Good News and confess allegiance to Christ. Next came very real persecution at the hands of angry former students. Not mean glares and disdainful looks, but physical attacks such as being stabbed and poisoned. The poisoning—with rat killer strategically placed in a sweet tea—permanently damaged his kidney and liver,...

Radical

Radical/Crazy/Extreme/Really, Really Radical/Even More Crazy than Ever Before In Christian subculture there has been a spate of books and conferences that have emphasized the "radical" nature of following Jesus. But what does it truly mean to be radical? To be radical is, literally, to get to the root of something. From that original meaning it became connected to "radical" in the sense of crazy/extreme/even more crazy than ever before. If radical basically, literally, means to get to the root of something, then nothing could be more radical than Romans 8 verses 12 to 14. 12 So then, brothers, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh. 13 For if you live according to the flesh you will die, but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. 14 For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. This is the...

God’s Sustaining Grace

God Centered Life Ministries is pleased to welcome Dr. Duane Litfin. He is president emeritus of Wheaton College and is the author of several books, including most recently Paul's Theology of Preaching (IVP Academic, May 2015) and Word vs. Deed (Crossway, 2012). This past summer we celebrated the life of Elisabeth Elliot during a memorial service at Wheaton College, Elisabeth’s alma mater. The service was a moving remembrance of a costly life, and a resounding testimony to the power of God’s sustaining grace. Among those who addressed the gathered crowd was another woman who has also known a costly life. Joni Eareckson Tada held us all in thrall as she spoke of how Elisabeth had befriended and mentored her through some of her own difficult times. Joni’s focus too was the marvelous sustenance of God’s grace. As a part of that memorial service we relived the famous, and quite extraordinary, events of Elisabeth’s life. But I also...
