Ephesians 4:1-16: Five Principles of Unity
June 7, 2019
TODAY'S BIBLE READING:
How do we maintain and further the unity of the church? Five principles of unity emerge from this amazing section of Paul’s teaching.
First, focus on the calling that you have received. Our unity in Christ is furthered as we reflect on Christ and what he has done for us. How can we not be united when we think of all that Christ has done to call us out of darkness and into his marvelous light?
Second, develop the characteristics of Christlikeness that further this unity. Namely, gentleness, humility, love. How do we develop these characteristics? The first step is to talk about them. To trumpet them. To elevate them. A church that wants to be united should celebrate the virtues that are likely to lead to unity.
Third, put in the work. Furthering unity is hard work. We must “make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace.”
Fourth, remember that we are united. Unity in the church is not something we create. It is already created. What we are to do is to keep that unity. We are one in Christ. Therefore, we must increasingly be who we are.
Fifth, further the grace given to each of us in the diverse administration of the word gifts. A church that is receiving and being given faithful Bible teaching is much more likely to be unified, for unity is a fruit of maturity and maturity comes as we receive God’s Word.
