Why I Wrote "7 Days to Change Your Life"

January 5, 2017

TODAY'S BIBLE READING:

Why another book? Because it isn’t just another book. 7 Days to Change Your Life represents two experiences in my personal life. One is wrestling with God over the challenges that came into our family’s life when one of our children was diagnosed with severe autism. This book is not about autism: it’s about finding that God is there when you thought no one else was. It is written out of the experience of thinking that I was at a crossroads in my life, and realizing that I wasn’t really at a crossroads. I was at a cliff’s edge. And then I found that His Son, who suffered for me, was my redemption in that moment of deepest darkness. The other experience built over many years, being in conversation with someone in my study, scanning along my bookshelves for a book to give that person, and not finding quite the right book. There are many, many books written by people that I have given away for various matters. But this issue of change, of starting again, of a focused resource for renewal and revitalization that was accessible, biblical, practical, and yet with vistas of profundity—I couldn’t find anything that quite fit what I wanted to give away. So I decided to write it. And what I discovered is that the reason why that kind of book didn’t seem to exist is because it’s harder to write than I expected! So this book has been a journey for me too. It represents my personal discovery of renewal in the person of Christ—not in a theory or an intellectualization or a framework or philosophy. But in him. And it represents also this practical yet biblical call of Jesus to follow him: seven days, seven calls, seven steps (if you will). My prayer is that as you read it, use it in your church or small group, you will encounter the Christ who is my Redeemer, friend, and Lord—and find in him renewed hope, joy, peace, and power to live the abundant life, now and forever.]]>
